TIGERS / A true story

1958. Based on a true story

This is a true story.
And it doesn’t begin with “once upon a time” because it’s still going on.
In 1958 Lowell North was a twenty-seven-year-old engineer with a predilection for sails who decided to set up his own sail loft.
North Sails.
Lowell was a champion. He won two Olympic medals with his sail—a gold in the Star class and a bronze in the Dragon class—and five world championships in the Star class.
But Lowell North was also an engineer. Sure, he knew the art of sailmaking, but more importantly, he knew the science. And so he gathered together a team of sailors and technicians united by an essential common denominator: a passion for sailing.
The Tigers.
Tigers move swiftly and leave deep tracks. Tigers are passion and audacity. Tigers are what these men embody.
Tom Whidden, Peter Barrett, John Marshall, Tom Schnackenberg, and Terry Kohler were star sailors, master sailmakers, men dedicated to the sea and its winds.
Peter Barrett was the first Tiger. Without having a clear idea of how he was going to do it, one day he sat down and constructed a sail that would carry him far, almost out of gratitude to its creator.
Then came John Marshall. He had a degree in chemistry under his belt and a PhD in viral genetics in the works, but he gave it all up to follow North.
Tom Whidden brought a gust of business acumen into the loft, taking it beyond its walls out onto the broad expanse of the sports sailing market.
But don’t expect to hear how the story ends, it still continues.
Better, once you finish reading this, go out there, discover what you can, feed your passions!
Embark on a project, put it in the water and give it a name.
We called ours North Sails.
